Youth-shaped Scouting: Chatting with Scouts Scotland’s Youth Lead, Mollie Reid
In March 2023, Mollie Reid was appointed as Scouts Scotland’s first-ever Youth Commissioner (now Youth Lead). We caught up with her to find out about how it’s going and more about her plans to keep young people’s voices at the heart of Scouting -- right across Scouting.
Ten months in post and wow! What an incredible journey it’s been so far.
Before my appointment in March 2023, I had only been involved in local Scouting, and it’s really eye-opening to see what happens at Scotland-level. There have been big changes in the Scotland Leadership Team, but we’ve really begun to come together as a team.
As I’ve been navigating my new role and the responsibilities that come with it, I have also really enjoyed finding my feet as a Trustee. On the Trustee Board I’ve been able to champion youth-shaped Scouting, ensuring young people’s voices are heard at all levels of the organisation.
Over the past months I have been working with the Scotland Leadership team to create a plan to ensure that Scouting in Scotland is youth shaped. I am pleased to announce that Regions are now working to recruit their own Youth Leads. Regional Youth Leads will be aged 18-24, and be responsible for influencing decisions, champion youth voices and support Leaders in the Region to make sure their young people are a key part of Scouting decisions within the Region.
Our Regions are looking for creative individuals, with ideas on how to make the region more youth shaped. Regional Youth Leads will have a seat on their Regional Trustee Board, to make sure that young voices are heard at the highest levels. You’ll also work with the Youth Lead (that’s me!) as part of a team to keep young people at the heart of Scouting across Scotland.
I know there are many young people out there who would be absolutely brilliant at this role, so if you are interested you really should apply! For more information about this, please reach out to your Region or me for more information. I am always happy to have a chat!
