Scouts Scotland supports the TIE Campaign
We are pleased to announce that Scouts Scotland is supporting the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign, which seeks to make the education system inclusive for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) young people.
Research has shown that 90% of LGBT pupils in Scottish schools experience homophobia, biphobia or transphobia, and 97% believe that it would have helped if their school had been LGBT inclusive.
Many of our LGBT members come to their local groups or Scouting events having experienced bullying related to their sexuality or gender identity during the week at school. These experiences can have a long-lasting effect on them, harming their educational and social progress.
Scouting is for everyone. We are an inclusive organisation and there are no barriers to enjoying your time in Scouting. No-one should experience bullying and we welcome any reform that will make Scotland a safer place for our young people to grow up.
The TIE Campaign reflects our Scouting values of integrity, respect, care, belief and cooperation. We are proud to welcome young people and adults from all backgrounds and we are currently working with partner organisations, such as LGBT Youth Scotland, to develop resources to help volunteers and sections provide an inclusive and supportive environment for all our members.
By supporting this campaign, we send a clear message to our members and the public about the importance of respect and helping others, whilst firmly saying to our current and future LGBT members that they are welcome in Scouting.
You can share your own support for the campaign by getting involved on social media, and we encourage you to do so.
