Our 12 best moments from 2017
It’s hard to believe it’s already December! This year has flown by thanks to a whirlwind of activity. We’ve seen more growth in Scottish Scouting, even more adventures for our young people, and the launch of exciting new initiatives to help make sure Scouting is shaped by young people in partnership with adults.
Thank you to all our members for helping us have another fantastic year! Before we head into the next one, we want to take a moment to pause and reflect on some of our achievements this year.
Our new website
We started 2017 with a new-look website for Scouts Scotland, showcasing what our movement can offer young people and providing a contemporary, user-friendly resource for our adult volunteers.
Celebrating youth involvement
February was #YouShape month, highlighting and celebrating our commitment to youth involvement, so what better time to launch our new Youth Approved Awards. So far we’ve given out 100 Foundation-level Awards!
Our award for MSPs
Our Youth Advocacy Award for politicians was launched. We worked with our National Youth Advisory Group to create an award to encourage elected representatives to learn more about Scouting and the issues that matter to young people. So far we’ve had more than 30 MSPs sign up!
Following a nationwide election, Logan Fraser and Euan McFadzean were selected to represent Scouts Scotland as Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament for 2017-19. As part of the election campaign, Logan and Euan joined all our MSYP candidates in a hustings event at Fordell Firs.
Growing and developing Scouting
We were delighted to report another year of membership growth – our 11th consecutive year. We also appointed two Local Development Officers to help grow Scouting in communities where youth provision is currently lacking.
New programme resources
Thanks to some fantastic partnership working with Global Learning Centre Scotdec and RSPB Scotland, we launched some fantastic activity packs for Leaders. We also worked with our activity centres to create a brilliant summer camp planning guide.
A great place to work
In May we were really proud to join an exclusive group of UK employers by achieving our Investors in People accreditation, in recognition of our commitment to our employees.
Summer memories at Lochgoilhead
Dozens of Cubs made memories to last a lifetime at ScotJAM, the first ever Cubs Jamboree at Lochgoilhead. The event was such a success we’re running it again in 2018 and adding a second week for the Scout Section.
We were excited to see so many young people experiencing adventures all over the world this summer. From Romania to Namibia, our youth members travelled far and wide. We were really proud to see more than 70 Scottish Scouts take part in the 15th World Scout Moot in Iceland.
Joining Scout Adventures
Our three activity centres at Fordell Firs, Lochgoilhead and Meggernie, joined the Scout Adventures network of centres, enhancing the capacity of these fantastic facilities for delivering outdoor adventure.
Planning for the future
We began the journey towards launching our exciting new strategy for 2018-2023, by inviting our members to feed back on our draft strategic plan. Consultation closed last month, and we’re now looking forward to reviewing your feedback to finalise the strategy and rolling it out next year.
Supporting inclusive education
As part of our ongoing work to make sure Scouting is welcoming and accessible for young people and adults from all backgrounds, we showed our support for the TIE campaign, which seeks to address all forms of homophobic bullying through inclusive education.
Share your highlights
Thank you again for all you do to support young people in Scotland. We know many of you have been achieving fantastic things in your groups, districts and regions so we’d love to hear about your best moments on our social media.
