New Scottish Canoe Association partnership
We are excited to announce a new partnership with the Scottish Canoe Association, which will mean more young people in Scouts will have the opportunity to develop skills in paddlesport, such as canoeing or kayaking.
The partnership will focus on making sure more volunteers in Scouts can deliver paddle sports sessions by providing support and training for our Leaders and also recruiting new volunteers with skills and experience in paddle sports, linking up with the paddle sports community where possible.
"We know that paddlesport is a hugely beneficial activity for young people; paddlesport offers adventure, develops important life skills, improves mental health and wellbeing."
Plans to explore a “regional paddle sports hub” for Scouts in Scotland could also help broaden access to the sport.
Judith McCleary, Scouts Scotland’s Head of Outdoors and Adventure, said: “Introductory paddlesport sessions are included in many of our programmes, whether that be at one of our Scout Adventure centres, or directly through Scouting groups. By working more closely with SCA, we hope to provide a clear pathway for anyone wishing to progress their development further in the sport.”
Andy Murray, Head of Coaching and Development at the Scottish Canoe Association, said: “We are delighted to be working with Scouts Scotland to create more opportunities for young people across the country to enjoy paddlesports. Thousands of Scouts across Scotland already take part in paddlesport, but in some cases a lack of suitably qualified volunteers or opportunities means paddlesport is not available to all young Scouts.
“We know that paddlesport is a hugely beneficial activity for young people; paddlesport offers adventure, develops important life skills, improves mental health and wellbeing, and working with Scouts Scotland to help more Scouts get on the water can only benefit the younger generation.”
Paddlesport at Scout Adventures Lochgoilhead
You can try paddlesport as part of a camp at Scout Adventures Lochgoilhead. The Lochgoilhead team can also offer the British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor Award for anyone who’d like to develop the skills to lead short basic paddling sessions for journeys for young people.
