Blog | Stay Healthy in Scotland's outdoors

30 June 2017

With lots of Scouts heading out into the outdoors this summer, we asked Natalie, our SHQ Commissioner (Outdoors and Adventure) to share some advice about how to stay healthy when out and about.

"With Summer now upon us it's great to see so many young people enjoying the great outdoors.

"We are fortunate in Scotland to have such a diversity of landscapes, from beautiful beaches on the West Coast to spectacular mountains of the Cairngorms and everything in between.

"As Leaders, it's heartening to see the huge smiles on the faces of young Beavers completing a coastal path walk or Explorers returning from a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition. These experiences create memories that will stay with young people forever and dramatically increase the chances of them continuing to be healthy and active in their adult lives.

"After consultation with the outdoor sector, the National Health Service has released an information resource of advice and support on staying safe and healthy in the outdoors.

"Leaders should adopt a common sense approach so it's well worth taking a look.

"The resource covers everything from hand washing to ticks. This year has seen an increase in ticks, so watching the video from Dr Douglas on how to remove ticks safely could be really useful."
